How to Obtain Cannabis for Medical Purposes

The process to obtain marijuana for medical purposes under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations is as follows.

Consult with an authorized health care practitioner

Treatment decisions regarding the medical use of marijuana are best made together with your health care practitioner.

As described in the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations, an authorized health care practitioner includes physicians in all provinces and territories, and nurse practitioners in provinces and territories where prescribing dried marihuana for medical purposes is permitted under their scope of practice.

Obtain a Signed Medical Document Form From Your Physician

You must obtain a medical document from your physician or authorized nurse practitioner which includes the proper information (listed below). 

  • Your full name
  • Your date of birth
  • Address where you consulted with the physician/ practitioner
  • Amount Authorized - daily grams of dried marijuana you are authorized to use, the period of use  (i.e. number of days, weeks or months), which cannot exceed one year from the date the medical document is signed by the health care practitioner
  • The health care practitioner's name and, administrative information (profession, license number, province of license, business address, phone number, fax number and email address, if applicable)
  • An attestation by the health care practitioner that the information contained in the document is true and complete.

Decide on a Licensed Producer You Want to Use, Then Register and Order

With a complete and signed medical document from your physician, you can register as a client with any licensed producer of your choice.  You will be required to submit certain information, including the original medical document. 

Many clinics and physicians sumbit the medical document directly to the licensed produced on the patient's behalf.  This is done after counselling the patient and deciding on a licensed producer with the patient.

Once registered you will be able to order dried marijuana from the licensed producer and your dried marijuana will be sent to you directly by the licensed producer.
